Sinds 2004 hebben de Catalaanse Pyreneeën een officieel regionaal natuurpark. Dat betekent dat het gebied duurzaam wordt ontwikkeld, zodat het zijn economische functie voor de regio kan behouden. Bij een nationaal park draait het veel meer om het behoud van de flora en fauna. Hier draait het natuurlijk Ook om het behoud van de natuur, maar het is niet het hoofddoel. Hoewel de flora hier wel heel bijzonder schijnt te zijn: een groot deel van de plantensoorten in dit gebied is echt inheems, ze komen nergens anders ter wereld voor. Het park is dan ook heel bekend bij botanici.
Natuur
Het Regionaal Natuurpark van de Catalaanse Pyreneeën is gewoon bewoond gebied. Met zeven beschermde natuurreservaten erin, dat dan weer wel. Ongeveer de helft van het park bestaat trouwens uit bos, dus met de natuur zit het hier wel snor. De hoogste toppen liggen in dit deel van de Pyreneeën rond de 3000 meter, dus er valt voor bergwandelaars behoorlijk wat te klimmen en te klauteren. En in de winter kun je er prima skiën. Het hooggebergte van Canigou valt trouwens ook onder het Regionaal Natuurpark.
Geel treintje
Dwars door het park rijdt al honderd jaar (sinds 1910) een geel boemeltje. Die rijdt door het hele gebied, van het mooie vestingstadje Villefranche-de-Conflent naar Latour-de-Carol. Het is een rit van ongeveer drie uur, en het treintje legt in die tijd 62 kilometer af. Mocht je die kant op moeten, dan kan ik je het boemeltje aanraden: je rijdt door een woest berglandschap, over oude bruggen en door prachtige groene valleien.
