Van kunst genieten tussen de badhokjes? Roubaix heeft bewezen dat het kan!
Kunst met een hoofdletter in Nord-Pas-de-Calais en Picardië en dat mag gerust zo worden gezegd. Want dat Frankrijk veel meer met kunst heeft dan hier in ons kikkerlandje is wel duidelijk lijkt me. In mijn geboortestad Hengelo zitten ze al jaren te bakkeleien over het wel of niet behouden van een monumentaal badhuis maar in Roubaix wisten ze er wel raad mee.
Het gemeentelijk badhuis dat ooit diende om de arme fabrieksarbeiders een wekelijkse wasbeurt en een paar uur zwemplezier te bezorgen is omgetoverd tot een toonaangevend museum. Het uit de begin 20 ste eeuw stammende badhuis is nu ingericht als museum. La Piscine, Musée d´Art en Industrie en herbergt de collectie Schone Kunsten uit de 19 de en 20 ste eeuw. Om te lekkerbekken…. Niet alleen de kunst is om te watertanden maar het badhuis is alleen al de moeite om eens te bekijken. De binnenkant van het museum is een juweel in Art Decostijl en de kenmerken van het voormalige badhuis zijn nog steeds aanwezig zoals de betegelde badhokjes die uitkomen in het zwembad.
Hier kan men genieten van schitterende beelden die langs het waterbassin zijn opgesteld. Echt hele bekende werken zijn er niet te vinden in het museum maar door juist de collectie onder te brengen in dit prachtige monumentale pand is het een indrukwekkend geheel ontstaan. Het is zeker de moeite waard om enigszins af te wijken van uw route naar het zonnige zuiden en om bij Roubaix de afslag te nemen.
