De Gorges du Verdon wordt ook wel de Grand Canyon du Verdon genoemd. Het is een indrukwekkende kloof op de grens van de departementen Var en Alpes-de-Haute-Provence en ligt in het uiterste zuiden van Frankrijk. Het is de grootste kloof in Europa, uitgesleten door de rivier de Verdon over een lengte van 25 km. De kloof wordt omgeven door een uitgestrekt natuurpark.
De rotswanden van de kloof zijn op sommige plekken 700 meter hoog en zeer imposant. De Gorges du Verdon trekt honderdduizenden mensen naar Frankrijk. De kloof eindigt in het stuwmeer van Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon. Dit is een uitgestrekt meer dat sterk gericht is op toeristen. U kunt hier kano’s huren, kayakken, waterfietsen en bovendien worden diverse motorbootjes verhuurd aan mensen die de kloof willen bezoeken.
In het natuurpark waarin de Gorges du Verdon gelegen is, kunt u perfect mountainbiken of wandelen en genieten van prachtige uitzichten op de kloof en het natuurpark. Wanneer u in het park wandelt, ontdekt u ook diverse roofvogels die in het park uitgezet zijn. Ze vliegen boven de kloof en zijn vanaf diverse uitzichtpunten goed zichtbaar. Bovendien zult u gieren zien, die zich op de steile rotswanden van de kloof netstelen.
De geoefende wandelaar kan in dit park gebruik maken van het beroemde ‘Martelpad’. Dit 15 km lange wandelpad is vernoemd naar de eerste Franse speleoloog die in 1905 de eerste tocht over de bodem van de kloof maakte.
In de omgeving zijn tientallen campings en andere overnachtingsmogelijkheden te vinden. De Gorges du Verdon is het bezoeken waard en zal u wellicht doen denken aan die grote kloof in Amerika….
