De laatste jaren neemt het uitschrijven af, de bankpas neemt ook in Frankrijk steeds meer de plaats in van de cheque, zo veelvuldig gebruikt in Frankrijk wegens het ontbreken van giraal verkeer. De banken willen wel af van die gratis cheques; de verwerking kost ze veel geld, zeggen ze. Geleidelijke afschaffing is zeer waarschijnlijk. In de meerste Europese landen wordt niet meer of nauwelijks nog gewerkt met cheques. Alleen op de eilanden Malta en Cyprus is het gebruik hoger dan in Frankrijk waar een inwoner gemiddeld 54 cheques per jaar uitschrijft. In Italië is dat nog slechts 6,5, in Duitsland een enkeling en in Nederland nul.
