De Mont Ventoux, bijgenaamd ‘de reus van de Provence’ domineert (in positieve zin!) het uitzicht in de wijde omgeving. Waar je ook zit, overal zie je die kale puist met de toren van het Observatorium erbovenop. De top is de enige van deze hoogte (bijna 2000 meter) in deze regio en wordt daarom dan ook wel De reus van de Provence genoemd.
Het hoogteverschil met de voet van de berg bedraagt maar liefst 1614 meter. De berg is met name bekend door de moeilijkheidsgraad en vanwege het ‘kale maanlandschap’. Dit kale landschap leidt er onder andere toe dat er op de Mont Ventoux altijd een zeer sterke Mistral wind staat, die het beklimmen van de berg nog meer bemoeilijkt. In tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld de Alpe d’Huez, kent de Mont Ventoux bijna geen haarspelbochten op de top van de berg. Dit maakt de berg tot één van de favoriete beklimmingen onder fietsliefhebbers.
In de wijde omgeving zijn er geen bergen te bespeuren die tot aan zijn middel rijken, al kun je in de verte, bij helder weer, de besneeuwde toppen van de Alpen zien. Hoewel zelden in de Tour beklommen, is de Mont Ventoux één van de topcols in Frankrijk. De zwaarste kant start via Bédoin, al is volgens sommigen, de Malaucène-zijde minstens even zwaar. Oefenen kan vanaf Sault, veruit de minst zware kant.
De Mont Ventoux heeft iets magisch, wat natuurlijk mede gevoed is door de diverse gebeurtenissen die zich in het verleden op deze reusachtige berg afgespeeld hebben. Diverse renners hebben tijdens de Tour de France moeten afzien op deze berg en moeten strijden om de top te kunnen bereiken.
