Overal ter wereld heeft carnaval een religieus karakter, dat beperkt is tot het einde van de vasten. In Duinkerken is dit niet het geval. Hier wordt het Carnaval beschouwd als één groot feest festijn dat wekenlang duurt. In deze Noord-Franse regio is het namelijk wekenlang carnaval en verdringen diverse bands elkaar om de stad op te vrolijken.
Het Carnaval van Duinkerken heeft een rijke geschiedenis en bestaat al ruim 200 jaar. Aanvankelijk waren het bijeenkomsten van de vissers. Zij vierden feest op de vooravond van de dag dat ze vertrokken voor een maandenlange reis naar de visgronden rond IJsland. In de loop van de tijd is deze betekenis van het Carnaval enigszins vervaagd.
Tegenwoordig trekken door de straten van Duinkerken duizenden feestvierders tijdens het Carnaval. Ze volgen de muziekbands die tegen mekaar opspelen, ze zingen de populaire carnavalliederen mee en dansen op de ritmische muziek van de diverse muziekinstrumenten.
Het carnavalfeest van Duinkerken is een niet te missen evenement vanwege van het pure plezier maar ook door de historische wortels die de eigenheid van dit feest sterk bepalen. Het carnaval biedt de bezoeker tevens de kans om een stad te leren die bij ons nog weinig bekend is, ondanks het feit dat er heel wat te zien is en te beleven valt. Bovendien is de stad gelegen in het zogenaamde ‘Frans Vlaanderen’, en is dus uitstekend te bereiken.
Het Carnaval in Duinkerken vindt ieder jaar in de periode januari / februari plaats.
